SUMMARY:
This is a responsible supervisory and administrative position in park law enforcement.  The Chief Ranger directs all activities of the Ranger Department, and is responsible for maintaining law and order, detecting and preventing crime, providing for safety of the public and Geauga Park District staff, protection of park property and resources, conducting investigations, the enforcement of Park District Rules and Regulations, and related duties.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:  this position minimally requires the following: 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: A four-year college degree with a major in natural resources, conservation, park administration, law enforcement or a related discipline, or equivalent experience. Demonstrated experience that is compatible with the Geauga Park District Mission to preserve, conserve and protect the natural resources of Geauga County. Current certification as an Ohio Peace Officer.  At least five years of Ranger or related police experience with increasingly greater responsibility including supervisory experience. 

CERTIFICATES OR LICENSES:
Certification as a Peace Officer by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Council required.  Must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License and a good driving record.  Must obtain and/or be able to maintain Park District approved first aid and CPR certifications.
Required Training:  All Geauga County Park District employees shall be required to complete and maintain all general mandatory training.  These may include, but are not limited to, emergency communications, hazardous materials, personal protective equipment, sexual harassment, violence in the workplace and fire prevention.

Other: 
 Must have no felony convictions.  Must be able to pass law enforcement psychological test and background investigation.  A pre-employment Background Check and Drug test are required. Must be able to follow an irregular schedule.  Must possess a high degree of integrity and the ability to be bonded.  A person serving in this position must have a commitment to responsible performance as a peace officer, good public relations skills and concern for the well being of the public. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: includes the following.  Other related duties may be assigned.

Perform supervisory duties including: establishing training standards; developing work schedules; monitoring quality of work; evaluation of performance; assisting in hiring process; implementation of guidelines to maintain discipline; decorum and dignity within the department; and conducting internal investigations.  Perform administrative duties including departmental budget preparation and management; scheduling, provide payroll data; inventory and purchase of supplies and equipment; establishing and implementing equipment maintenance schedules; researching and analyzing data; preparing all necessary departmental reports; and establishing safety and standard operating procedures.  Conduct and attend appropriate meetings.  Deliver presentations to various groups.  Maintain working relationships with other agencies and organizations.
Protect life and property by patrolling Park District lands and waters by foot, motor vehicle, bicycle and watercraft.  Respond to concerns, complaints and disturbances within the Park District and immediate area.  Enforce the provisions of the Ohio Revised Code and Park District Rules and Regulations through the appropriate use of warnings, citations or arrest.  Be alert to suspicious persons and detain or provide surveillance as may be appropriate.  Investigate crimes and other incidents, detect and investigation environmental risks which affect Park District property.  Identify safety situations and report to appropriate parties.  Develop and implement department projects.  Write and maintain arrest records, investigative reports and related law enforcement documentation.  Control vehicle and pedestrian traffic, investigate crashes and injuries.  Administer CPR and first aid as required.  Serve warrants, attend court sessions and provide testimony as appropriate.  Render assistance, information or service to park visitors.  Prepare reports, including end of the month reports as required. Conduct safety, law enforcement, interpretive and educational programs.  Report maintenance needs of departmental equipment and property and perform routine maintenance as necessary.  Distribute Park District literature.  Patrol all park boundaries and protect park resources.  Inspect trails and pick up litter.  Perform animal control procedures.  Qualify with weapons as required.  Assist and cooperate with other Park Departments.  Provide mutual aid and assistance to other agencies as appropriate.  Perform other job-related duties as assigned.  This is a law enforcement position and as such, has an inherent risk to personal safety.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Chief Ranger will effectively interact with and report to the Executive Director and Deputy Director.  The Chief Ranger will apprise his supervisors of all related ranger activities and personnel issues.
This position supervises all employees in the Ranger Department and may oversee restitution workers and volunteers.

Must be skilled in use of authorized weapons.  Must be highly skilled in maintaining composure under stressful conditions.  Skill in gathering data and information, sorting, collating, analyzing and reporting.  Skill in drawing conclusions and taking appropriate action.  Skill in health and safety procedures and compliance.  Must be well organized.

Chief of Rangers Five Rivers MetroParks Dayton, Ohio

Position Description:

Five Rivers MetroParks Park District, which encompasses approximately 16,000 acres of park land in Montgomery County, Ohio and adjacent counties, is seeking candidates for the position of Chief of Park Rangers to manage the Ranger Division of 34 full-time employees and 4 part-time employees.  Currently, this position reports directly to the MetroParks Executive Director.

Requires an undergraduate degree in Law Enforcement, Public Administration, Criminal Justice or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Seven to ten years experience in law enforcement supervision and administration is required, along with a proven track record of success in management, staff supervision, communication, conflict resolution and problem solving.  Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license and safe driving record and hold a current Ohio Peace Officer Training Certification.  Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a comprehensive background investigation that includes a drug screening, polygraph, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.

Salary and Benefits:
